SimER

SimER (Simulation of Environmental Risks) is a powerful performance assessment code, developed by Nexia Solutions with support from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). SimER can be used to support decision making on site end states and management strategies for sites at a level consistent with requirements for regulatory submissions. Applications of SimER include contaminated land and waste disposal. A number of components make up SimER.

SimERs capabilities include:

  • 3D groundwater flow (saturated and unsaturated conditions) and contaminant transport (radioactive and non-radioactive).
  • Representation of topographical details and geological structures.
  • Explicit climate and landscape change representation.
  • 3D modelling of engineering and remediation options for contaminated land sites.
  • Assessment-level representation of biogeochemical reactions to represent the chemical evolution of the system.
  • Applicable to both radioactive and non-radioactive contaminants.
  • Calculation of a wide range of impacts, environmental risks and doses over time.

Useful features include:

  • Flexible inventories component - variety of waste forms emplaced at different times or contaminated land.
  • Multiple run capability allowing sensitivity studies and probabilistic (stochastic) assessments.
  • Flexible input language including unit checking.
  • Built-in visualisation capability to display 3D views of model output and plot graphs of parameters against time.
