Joe Small

Joe Small is an environmental geochemist with over 20 years academic and industrial experience and has published 35 peer reviewed scientific journal and conference proceedings. Joe has over 9 years experience of the nuclear industry through BNFL and Nexia Solutions Ltd.

Specific areas of technical expertise include:

  • Geochemical interpretation
  • Geochemical and safety assessment modelling of radioactive waste repository near-fields
  • Development of an assessment methodology for the environmental, economic and societal BPM assessment of options for waste disposal and disposition of spent fuel and civil plutonium
  • Computer code development and validation
  • Development of novel techniques in applying geochemical based speciation models to the nuclear industry.

Joe holds a BSc in Geology, an MSc in Clay Mineralogy and a PhD in Sedimentary Geochemistry. He also acts as a PhD supervisor in geochemistry and radiochemistry and is on the Science Panel of the Immobilisation Science Laboratory (ISL) and Centre for Radiochemistry Research (CRR).
